Introduction

Like many other everyday ingredients, coconut oil can be infused with cannabis. Coconut oil can be used in a variety of applications and is a better option than butter to the best of our knowledge. Coconut Oil snickerdoodles, smoothies, pasta, toast, popcorn, the possibilities are endless! The difference between refined and unrefined coconut oil is unrefined has a more natural coconut flavor while the refined is almost tasteless. We prefer refined but either will work great.

Cannabis comes in two forms, high CBD and high THC, and this method will work for either or. You can use trim, popcorn buds, rosin chips, flowers, hash, kief and wax products for this infusion.

If you are using lab tested material, follow these steps to calculate the dosage for your honey.

  1. Check the lab results and locate the THC or CBD %, for this example we have a 20.4% THC Blue Dream.
  2. Take the THC test percentage and multiply it by 10, 20.4% = 204mg
  3. Then multiply your mg per gram to the amount of cannabis you are infusing, for example we will be using 55 grams of cannabis later on in this page, so, 55*204 = 11,220mg*

*There is some THC degradation and not all THC is absorbed during extractions so this is an estimate, but commonly used dosing information, you can test the end edible after infusion to get an accurate dosage at a local testing lab.

Preparation:

Before we start our cannabis infusion, let’s make sure we have everything we need. For this infusion you will need 2 cups (16oz) coconut oil, and 1 to 56 grams of cannabis product for every 2 cups of coconut oil (trim, popcorn buds, rosin chips, flowers, hash, kief, wax, AVP are all fine). You will also need a large cooking pot, a metal spoon to mix with, as well as a thermometer and a metal tray for decarboxylation.

Step One:

Decarboxylate your cannabis by putting it on a tray and into the oven at 210f for 45 minutes. Be warned, this will create a very pungent smell. Make sure to mix the cannabis around every 15 to 20 minutes for an even heat dispersal. After 45 minutes remove the cannabis from the oven and the majority of the THCa will have converted into THC and be ready for infusion.

Step Two:

Add your coconut oil into a large cooking pot and put the heat on low, and add in your cannabis that just came out of the oven. Stir it in and add a candy thermometer to gage the temperature of your honey. Try to maintain a temperature between 130-190f.

Step Three:

Every 10 to 15 minutes for the next two hours you will need to stir your cannabis coconut oil to make sure the cannabinoids are being extracted out of the cannabis. You could also stir your coconut oil the entire time, but every 10 to 15 minutes should work.

Step Four:

After two hours take your cannabis coconut oil off the stove, and strain it carefully through a bubble bag or cheesecloth, and squeeze the bag to get out any remaining coconut oil. From here you can add your cannabis infused coconut oil into a jar, or whatever else you would like, and most importantly, ENJOY!

Discard of your cannabis/coconut oil from inside of your bag by throwing it out or burying it outside in your garden for it to break down.

Magical Butter Machine:

Another option which would remove most of the work for you would be using a Magical Butter Machine.

You will also need a metal tray to decarboxylate your cannabis.

Step Two:

Add your coconut oil into the magical butter machine and add in your cannabis that just came out of the oven. Put the lid on, select 160f and 2 hours.

Step Three:

After an hour take your lid off the magical butter machine and carefully strain your infused coconut oil through the provided bag, and squeeze the bag to get out any remaining oil. From here you can add your cannabis infused coconut oil into a jar, or whatever else you would like, and most importantly, ENJOY!

Discard of your cannabis/coconut oil from inside of your bag by throwing it out or burying it outside in your garden for it to break down.

NOVA Decarboxylator

Another option for decarbing your cannabis aside from sticking it into the oven for 45 minutes is the NOVA Decarboxylator. This machine is a “set and forget” machine alot like the Magical Butter Machine, and will perfectly decarb your cannabis each time irregardless of amount and input (flower, trim, hash, kief etc), simply read the introductions before use. This machine will also negate the smell that you would experience decarbing in the oven.
